Timber Queensland is the peak timber industry body in Queensland.
With origins stretching back to 1938, our name is synonymous with impartiality and authority.

Who we are.

We are an outcome focused, non-profit industry association representing the interests of Queensland's forest and timber industry. Our unique and diverse membership base consists of timber businesses from plantation growers, harvesters, sawmillers, treaters and merchants through to timber users including manufacturers, architects and builders.

Timber Queensland, on behalf of our members, works to educate politicians, government departments, employer and environmental groups on the benefits of the timber industry and future opportunities. We are committed to creating greater public and political awareness of the forest and timber industries, and the valuable economic and environmental contribution they make to Queensland.

A key role of Timber Queensland is to support and encourage the development and expansion of the forest and timber industries.

Timber Queensland's Board has released the 2024 - 2027 Timber Queensland Strategic Plan, which was developed following consultation amongst Directors and members.

This Plan sets out core priority outcomes over the next few years and is intended as a high-level document to set out core priority outcomes and guide key activities of the organisation.

We represent forest and timber industry interests at all levels of government, in regulatory, policy and standards forums on issues covering strategic planning and allocation processes, royalties, codes of practice and legislative changes. With almost 80 years of knowledge and experience Timber Queensland has a proud history of enhancing and developing the Queensland forest and timber industry through ongoing education and awareness with key policy makers and stakeholders.

Timber Queensland facilitates a forum to develop strategic industry positions on matters such as native forest management, certification, plantation development, wood processing and workforce development.

We offer an avenue for the timber industry to influence Australian Standards and building industry policy and assist industry to acquire Government grant funding to support projects with industry-wide benefits.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Mick Stephens

Mick Stephens is the Chief Executive Officer for Timber Queensland (TQ), the peak state industry body for the forest and timber industry. Mick is an experienced executive leader and resource economist with over 30 years’ experience in research, policy, strategy and advocacy both nationally and overseas. He has served the interests of the forest industries for many years and was previously the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Forest Products Association (AFPA), the peak national body for the forest, wood and paper products industry. He has held senior public sector roles in ABARES, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Bureau of Transport and Regional Economics and CSIRO. From 2003 to 2006 he was Deputy Administrator of the Australian external territory of Norfolk Island, involved in land and public administration. His research and policy focus has included plantation development and sustainable forest management, rangelands, agroforestry, carbon markets, renewable energy, timber standards, regional development, forest products manufacturing, northern beef production, fisheries and climate change policy. From 1998 to 2000 he worked on forestry climate change mitigation with the Canadian Forest Service in Ottawa. Mick has considerable experience in the interface between research and policy and translating research and development into tangible industry development outcomes and the setting of priority directions for future growth. In 2008 he was the recipient of a Churchill Fellowship to look into agroforestry practices in North America and Europe, and in 2010 received a Gottstein Fellowship to investigate active management for forest fire prevention and landscape benefits in the United States and Canada. He has produced numerous articles and scientific papers on forestry, regional development and agricultural land use. He is a Director of First Super and sits on a number of Queensland Government advisory bodies. Mick has a degree in economics from Flinders University, post-graduate qualifications in environmental science and a Master of Forestry from the Australian National University.

GENERAL MANAGER STRATEGIC RELATIONS & COMMUNICATIONS

Clarissa Brandt

Clarissa is the General Manager Strategic Relations & Communications for Timber Queensland. She has made a significant contribution to the growing recognition of the superior environmental and sustainability benefits of timber building products. Clarissa studied journalism at the University of Queensland followed by a Bachelor of Business from QUT. In 2018 she completed the Forestry Leaders Program hosted by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation and was a finalist in the 2021 Women in Forest Industries Award of Excellence.

GENERAL MANAGER POLICY & INDUSTRY

DEVELOPMENT

Dr Greg Leach

Greg Leach is a General Manager with Timber Queensland guiding industry leadership in the rollout of the Queensland Future Timber Plan 2050. He has previously developed the AgCarE program in AgForce, managed the Regional Engagement Team and has three decades of program management experience in consulting with over 3,000 landholders, assisting with property management planning concerns, profitability, and natural asset condition. Greg has a doctorate from Wageningen University in the Netherlands and extensive experience in agricultural extension, consultancy, policy development, and program management. He is passionate about the land, agriculture and the people who live and work in regional, rural and remote Australia. He seeks to influence preservation and sustainable development of rural landscapes, businesses and communities and vegetation management policies and regulation in the interests of farmers.

COMMUNICATIONS & EVENT OFFICER

Chloe Downey

Chloe is an award-winning strategic communications and events professional with over a decade of experience delivering high-impact engagement initiatives across the industry, research, and corporate sectors. She joined Timber Queensland from the ARC Advance Timber Hub, where she played a key role in implementing communication strategies and managing the delivery of the 2025 World Conference on Timber Engineering (WCTE). At Timber Queensland, Chloe focuses on increasing the visibility and impact of the state’s forest and timber industry through multi-channel content, stakeholder programs, and the seamless delivery of the association’s annual event calendar. She holds a Bachelor of International Hotel and Tourism Management (Event Major) from the University of Queensland and is passionate about building strong industry connections and showcasing the innovative work of the timber sector.

Matt Smith

Matt has over 25 years’ experience designing and inspecting timber buildings. Matt is a RPEQ, Structural Engineer who has held various positions with several timber design companies.

TECHNICAL CONSULTANT

Vaimiti Rigal

A chartered structural engineer with over a decade of design and inspection experience across civil, commercial, and residential timber structures, Vaimiti combines engineering precision with site-based practical knowledge. She offers valuable insight into the integration of engineering design, prefabrication, construction, and inspection.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT CONSULTANT

Dr Diana Saunders

Dr Diana Saunders is a workforce development consultant with 17+ years of experience. Through her consultancy, Data, People and Strategy, she partners with industry bodies to tackle workforce challenges, skills shortages, and future capability needs. With a PhD in Management, Diana brings expertise in workforce planning, project management, and stakeholder engagement. She has a strong track record of delivering workforce strategies and training initiatives across Queensland's primary industries having worked with organisations such as Queensland Farmers' Federation and Sugar Research Australia. At Timber Queensland, Diana drives workforce training projects that connect industry, government, and training providers to deliver practical, evidence-based solutions for the sector's capability needs — now and into the future.

NORTH QLD FORESTRY HUB MANAGER

Hulton King

Growing up planting hoop pines on his family's Atherton Tablelands property on weekends, Hulton pairs local knowledge with industry expertise in his role as Hub Manager for the North Queensland Forestry Hub. The Hub conducts technical work and stakeholder engagement for the timber sector across this region on behalf of the Commonwealth Government. Prior to joining Timber Queensland, Hulton worked across a range of Government-sponsored research projects in the region as a programs manager at the Reef and Rainforest Research Centre for the National Environmental Science Program's Tropical Water Quality Hub.

SOUTH & CENTRAL QLD FORESTRY HUB MANAGER

Kerry Fullarton

With more than 30 years' experience as a senior manager for a range of Government sponsored and private sector projects and a strong background in stakeholder engagement and project management, Kerry brings experience and energy to her role as Hub Manager for the South & Central Queensland Regional Forestry Hub. Here, her role is focused on exploring opportunities and challenges in the forestry and wood products sector, prioritising projects created to boost industry growth and local investment and backed by her previous experience in delivering business outcomes in regional communities across Queensland and the Northern Territory.
