Designing, specifying and building timber structures: an induction workshop - THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT.

Event Type: Seminar
Date: Thursday 6 October 2016
Location: Darcey Mitchell Room, Broncos Leagues Club, 98 Fulcher Rd, Red Hill

Event Description

Please email sarah@timberqueensland.com.au for the wait list. The failure of timber to live up to user expectations is a common complaint. However, the fault rarely lies with the timber itself. Appropriate design, specification and a maintenance regime will deliver real benefits and long-term client satisfaction. If you’re a building professional involved in lightweight or heavy timber construction there are hard facts and simple solutions that you must know to maximise the performance of timber.

Event Program

THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT. PLEASE EMAIL sarah@timberqueensland.com.au FOR THE WAIT LIST.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

  • Familiarise yourself with the wood structure, the impact of moisture in wood and structural and appearance grading.
  • Learn how to achieve a long service life by combining natural wood durability with timber treatments.
  • Understand hardwood timber grading and how to think critically about performance criteria.
  • Study the correct use of joints and connections.
  • Evaluate the critical factors in the use of internal and external timber battens to avoid maintenance nightmares.
  • Know how to avoid common timber deck design problems that can lead to failure.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM

8.30

Registration.  Tea & Coffee.

9.00

Wood Basics - Terminology, Properties & Specification

This presentation provides an overview of wood terminology, applications of wood materials, production of wood, characteristics of wood and relationship with properties, grading, durability, specification and handling as well as an overview of manufactured wood products such as cross laminated timber.

Learning Outcome.

  • Be able to describe the essential timber and wood product types
  • Recognise the essential properties of timber and wood products
  • Have the ability to specify timber and wood products

10.00

Timber Preservation.

This presentation teaches, in the context of AS1601.1, how to achieve a long service life by combining natural wood durability with timber treatments.

Learning Outcome.

  • Understand the limitations of timber preservation
  • Understand the difference between sapwood stabilization and preservation
  • Understand aspects of the Standards that cannot be achieved
  • Recognize areas of the Standard that could be in error
  • Be able to specify natural durability

10.45

Morning Tea

11.15

Hardwood Grading.

This presentation explains stress grades in the context of AS2082 and case histories.

Learning Outcome.

  • Understand the strengths of stress graded hardwood
  • Understand what the grades of timber specified look like
  • Understand the deficiencies of stress graded hardwood
  • Identify and name and assess different natural features
  • Think critically about performance criteria for products

12.05

Timber Decks – Designing for Durability.

Careful specification of commercial decking means that deck failure is now frequently related to the substructure design. This presentation teaches how to design to avoid common problems.

Learning Outcome.

  • Recognise the difference between a domestic and a commercial deck
  • Recognise the importance of protecting the joist from fastener damage
  • Recognise the importance of designing for set length decking, not lineal
  • Learn how to design for set length decking
  • Recognise the importance of stainless fasteners

Joints.

Timber joints have been known for 7000 years but in the last century they have changed and improved dramatically. This presentation will look particularly at weather exposed joints

Learning Outcome.

  • Learn the difference between new and old joints
  • Learn why joints have to be durable
  • Examine whether to use galvanized or stainless fasteners
  • Examine different ways to engage with the ground
  • Learn the correct use of nail plates and grips
  • Leran good detailing in handrail connections
  • Examine the use of shear rings and plates

3.00

Afternoon Tea

3.15

Architectural Timber Battens.

While timber battens can look very good on contemporary buildings they can be a maintenance nightmare. This presentation explains how to design to avoid this possibility.

Learning Outcome.

  • Learn why would we use Architectural Timber Battens
  • Understand the critical factors for internal battens
  • Understand the critical factors for external battens
  • Understand the importance of a weather shedding profile
  • Understand the need for caution with recycled timber battens
  • Learn correct fastener selection and support design

Your Workshop Presenters

Ted Stubbersfield, Timber Design Consultant

Ted’s family has been involved in sawmilling and building for about 140 years.  In 1985 he ventured into the footbridge market and then followed public landscaping.  Initially he just did as he was told by consultants who knew very little about timber.  But in about 1988 Ted decided he would come to know the medium he was working with far better than any of his competitors and most of the professionals who used his products.

Ted realised that there were no useful standards and guides for designing and building weather exposed timber structures such as boardwalks and set down a path of writing design guides all relevant to the use of outdoor timber.  He has since published more than 10 timber design guides, which are to be progressively released under by WoodSolutions and won numerous government and industry awards for timber manufacturing, sawmilling and product innovation.

Colin MacKenzie RPEQ

Colin has over 30 years of experience in all facets of timber and wood products design, use and application, particularly where used in building and construction. His expertise has been developed form early days employed as a Technical Officer with CSIRO Divisions of Forest Products and Division of Building Research through to more recent times as Technical Director (TRADAC) and then Manager, Timber Application and Use (Timber Queensland).
