Tie-down Rods - Use the correct washers!
Recent inspections of building sites by TQL staff, especially in North Queensland has revealed widespread use of incorrect washers. In some cases, it appears that suppliers may be at fault. TQL has raised this matter with known suppliers.
Rod Washers used with tie-down rods must be of the size nominated in the framing manuals or the Australian Standard AS 1684. In many cases it is the washer that determines the allowable uplift force.
The minimum allowable washer size for rod connections are as follows:
12 mm = 50 x 50 x 3 mm
16 mm = 65 x 65 x 5 mm
20 mm = 75 x 75 x 6 mm
*or circular washers or equivalent and nett bearing area are an acceptable alternative (see below diagram)
